Call it one last chance at summer, a kick-off for the winter season, or just an excuse to use my new board I got last week. Not an official surfrider event; just a few kooks on a road trip.
There's a stand-up paddle event down near Virginia Beach on Columbus Day weekend on October 8th. I'm trying to gather up some DC area folks to go down, and I wanted to extend the invite.
Event: Stand Up Paddle Event to be held on the 8th
sandbridgelife.com/archives/574 $40 entry
Alternately, feel free to surf, kayak, swim, kite or stare blankly at the ocean.
Best Campsite: First Landing (about a half hour north of event)
www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/fir.shtml#camping at $24 per night per campsite, 6 people max per campsite. Google says 3hr 42 min from DC and a half hour north of the event. It's on the bay, but not the ocean. Lots of availability for tent camping that weekend.
Local surf shops: Seems like there are a bunch. Surfboard rentals are available, a few SUP rentals, but no wetsuit rentals (I found one seasonal shop that has 3 wet suit rentals). An adequate to good wetsuit will run about $100 and many of the shops still open sell wetsuits. I have one extra wetsuit (M/T tri wetsuit.)
Ridesharing: I personally think it's super-important we organize
carpools. You know, for environmental reasons. Plus, I need a ride.
Feel free to respond below in this thread, especially if you have extra boards or wetsuits. If you have a stupid question you are embarrassed to ask in front of the whole group, feel free to email me separately at andrewclstuff at my gmail account.
